Ethical User Interface Design

Harry Brignull’s presentation of Dark Patterns in user interface design is definitely worth watching. I’m particularly interested in it because he calls for a (better) Code of Ethics for ux designers. Enginers have several options for Codes of Ethics, including the IEEE Code of Ethics, the ACM Code of Ethics, and the National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics. Ethics in engineering has a long history, part of which I discuss in my PhD Dissertation. I see no reason this shouldn’t also apply to user interface design and user experience design.
